Santa Cruz native and current Newport Beach resident John Mel won the boys 14-and-under division in the Surfing America Prime West contest at Upper Trestles over the weekend, the Orange County Register reported.
Mel, son of big-wave surfer Peter Mel, beat Ventura’s Eithan Osborne, Pacific Beach’s Ryland Rubens, and Venice Beach’s Noah Hill in the final heat, according to results posted on the OCR website. The OCR also has a photo gallery up of the contest.
